Watercolour & Gouache

Watercolor was originally an ancient form of painting in East Asia. Of all the art mediums, it allows for transparency and luminosity that other mediums don’t. As an artist experiments with new colors, they must work quickly because the hues blend together quickly, seeing as how watercolor is a fast-drying medium.

Gouache is a water-based paint similar to watercolor & has been in use since at least the 9th century, often appearing in Persian miniatures.

Where watercolors are transparent, allowing for subtle layering, gouache mixes colored pigments with an opaque white pigment, often chalk, creating a velvety matte finish that absorbs light rather than reflecting it.

Traditionally, the most common support material for these painting techniques are watercolor paper, which is made entirely of cotton. Nirali’s artistic journey started with watercolors!
